Maralinga’s Long Shadow: Yvonne’s story wins NSW Premier’s Award

The annual NSW Premier’s Awards for History, presented in Sydney on Friday 1 September 2017, saw one of our partnership projects honoured, when “Maralinga’s Long Shadow: Yvonne’s Story” took out the Young People’s History Award. Facilitated and authored by Christobel Mattingley, the book traces one family’s story in the wake of the Maralinga nuclear tests and other historical events in remote South Australia.

Yvonne Edwards was a renowned painter from Yalata Community, where Christobel and artists in the Nuclear Futures Partnership Initiative developed arts projects during 2014-16. The book features many of Yvonne’s paintings, photographed by Jessie Boylan, with Christobel’s text developed in collaboration with the Edwards Family. The project has been a collaboration between Christobel, the Edwards Family, Yalata Community, Publisher Allen & Unwin and Alphaville.
